WordPress has released version 6.6.1 to address significant flaws found in the recently launched version 6.6. This update resolves seven major issues, including two that caused fatal errors (website crashes), a problem that led security plugins to issue false warnings, and several bugs that resulted in unwanted UI changes.

One issue that received considerable attention on social media impacted users of certain page builders and themes, such as Divi. The problem caused all links to be underlined, dramatically altering the appearance of websites.

While some users joked that underlined links were a “fix,” it was not appropriate for all links, such as those in top-level navigation. Divi issued an emergency fix, even though the issue was on the WordPress side. WordPress acknowledged the bug and confirmed that it would be resolved in version 6.6.1.

Other Issues Fixed in 6.6.1:

  • Fatal Error: is_utf8_charset() undefined when called by code in compat.php, noticed by WP Super Cache users. WP Super Cache provided a temporary workaround by disabling website caching.
  • PHP Fatal Error: “PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Object of class WP_Comment could not be converted to string.” This issue was related to a part of the WordPress code receiving incorrect data, causing a PHP fatal error. Discovered by a Divi user.
  • Additional fixes included:
    • Correcting a bug causing security plugins to issue false positive hacker file alerts.
    • Fixing a bug in the display of the admin toolbar.
    • Resolving invalid CSS that caused unwanted horizontal scrolling on web pages.
    • Addressing an issue in the Post Editor that caused the category chooser box to become excessively long.

Updating to WordPress 6.6.1 is highly recommended to avoid these issues and ensure a stable website experience. Read the full details of WordPress 6.6.1 Maintenance Release.
