WordPress core contributor Héctor Prieto has unveiled the official WordPress release schedule in 2025 along with the call for volunteers.

Based on the tenative schedule outlined in the official post and the Gutenberg release cadence, WordPress 6.8 is expected to include up to Gutenberg 20.4, encompassing a maximum of 11 releases.

This depends on any adjustments to the end-of-year Gutenberg release schedule (under the current timeline, Gutenberg 20.0 RC and stable releases are set for December 25th and January 1st, respectively).

These dates take into account key events such as WordCamp Asia and WordCamp Europe, as well as the year-end holidays.

The three major releases are scheduled almost the same way as 2024:

  • WordPress 6.8 – Beta 1 on March 4, stable release on April 15
  • WordPress 6.9 – Beta 1 on June 24, stable release on August 5
  • WordPress 7.0 – Beta 1 on September 30, stable release on November 11

Prieto said, “Although the 6.8 dates aren’t final yet, they are close enough to inform contributors about their availability around that time.”

The community is encouraged to provide feedback on the schedule by November 29, 2024, via comments or Slack DMs, which brings us to the call for volunteers for WordPress 6.8.

Call for Volunteers for WordPress 6.8

Along with the release schedule, Prieto has shared the timeline for WordPress 6.8. The stable release is slated for April 15, 2024. The 6.8 release squad is currently seeking volunteers for various lead roles, including:

  • Release Coordinators
  • Core Tech Leads
  • Editor Tech Leads
  • Core Triage Leads
  • Editor Triage Leads
  • Documentation Leads
  • Test Leads
  • Design Leads
  • Performance Leads

Notably, WordPress 6.8 will not feature a new default theme, so there will be no theme lead role. Additionally, WordPress 6.7 did not have a dedicated Marketing Lead role, but depending on feedback from the previous release, this role may be reinstated for 6.8 or other necessary positions may be added.

Despite challenges, including some contributors being temporarily blocked from WordPress Slack and others stepping back, the call for volunteers has already attracted a number of interested parties, according to WP Tavern.

Those wishing to join the WordPress 6.8 release squad as a lead should comment below the announcement by December 6th, specifying their desired role.

The release decisions for WordPress 6.8 will be made by the release squad, who will also finalize the WordPress release schedule while gathering input from the community. For more details on the roles and responsibilities, contributors can refer to the Core Handbook.
